People can fall in love with an image of their own creation and then blame the other party for not fitting that image.
The other party could try to fit the image but that could be a waste of effort since the pretence would need to be sustained. So it may be better to accept the separation the code signals.
The code implies a sort of accusation, yet the accusation is unfounded. If you disappoint someone's image of you then, possibly, that image was at fault.
The many ways of ending a relationship may be true in part. What matters is the need to end the relationship and to signal that end.
