Do not assume that we know the current situation. Please spell it out. What is the background? What is happening?
Some people in the room may be much more familiar with the current situation than others. The speaker may assume that everyone knows the current situation and that he or she would be wasting their time going over it again. This may be so, but code 9/7 & 9/2 allows participants to signal that they are not fully in the picture. All suggested changes need to be judged against the present position, so a very clear understanding of the present position is essential. It may be that those present 'should' know the present position. That is irrelevant. They may need to be reminded of it. Many people serve on several different boards and cannot be expected to remember the nuances of the situation in each organization. How much detail the speaker chooses to give in setting out the present position is up to the speaker and his or her assessment of the needs of the audience. The person who needs to be 'put in the picture' may signal that he or she is not yet in the picture-or may simply ask questions. As with code 9/1, if only one person signals 9/2 then the matter need not be attended to in detail. But if more people choose the same signal more effort is evidently needed.
