This is something I really, really want to do. I hope I can have your approval and support.
There is an overlap between 8/6 and 8/7. The difference is that with 8/7 the youngster is willing to explain why he or she wants to do something.
It may be a choice, an ambition, an ultimate goal or a course of action. The person is asking for:
* lack of resistance
* approval
* encouragement
* support.
There are tennis prodigies whose parents encouraged them. There are musical geniuses whose parents pushed them. There may be a fine line between encourage and push. There is a sharp distinction between the parents' choice of direction and the youngster's choice of direction. This code signals the youngster's choice and asks for parental approval and support.
'I hope you will not disapprove of this and resist it' is a large part of the request, since parents are often perceived to be in a permanent disapproving mode (based on superior experience).
If the person asked by the code cannot approve the proposed course of action then he or she must say so clearly. There is still a high value in having a simple means of making the request.
The request is not for a blank cheque; it is a 'hope'.
Young people are often difficult to understand because they may be involved in complex relationships which adults cannot perceive.
There may be reasons why something is important which would sound totally trivial and absurd to an adult. That is why the youngster does not want to spell out the reasons. At the same time the reasons are very real and important to the youngster.
The request is a request for trust. It is a request to trust the values of a younger world. To a youngster it is very important to establish and keep a position in a'peer group'. To an adult this may not seem important at all.
To a youngster what seems to be important is indeed important. The youngster may be mistaken from an adult point of view but the youngster is living in a young world, not the adult one.
Any request for 'trust' can be abused if the request is made too often and is used to cover matters which should really be discussed. It is up to youngsters not to abuse this particular code because if it is abused it may no longer be available when it is really needed.
