I am having difficulty making a decision. I am having difficulty making up my mind. I would like to discuss the matter with you.
The important point here is that the code user does not want to be told what to do but wants help in making his or her decision. It may be a matter of giving advice based on a wider experience. It may be a matter of directing attention to something which is being overlooked. It may be just an independent view which is not biased by emotions.
There are many ways in which a decision can be helped. Oncethe broader picture can be seen the decision becomes much easier. If you have a good road map it is easier to choose the right road.
The parent or adult must resist the temptation of providing the decision. At worst the adult may say: 'If I was in your position, this is what I would probably do . . .'
It is best to say something like: That is the way I see the situation but the decision is yours to make.' Different values and different long-term goals can lead to different decisions based on the same input.
