8/1

I am in trouble and I need your help. I do not want a lecture or a judgement. I need to talk to you. Is that possible ?

Parents are often seen as a source of admonition, lectures and disapproval. Too often this is necessary because the energy of youth can seem to take wrong turnings. The difficulty is to have some way of laying aside this 'judgement' role in order to take up an 'advice and help' role. Code 8/1 is a request for just such a switch. There may be many ways of expressing the same thing in normal language but none of them would have the clarity and directness of a/1 as an accepted code. Some parents manage very well the complex role of guide, judge and friend. Some find themselves, even unwillingly, emphasizing one role over the others. All roles may be required.Different temperaments, of both parent and child, seem to encourage one or other role to become dominant. Code 8/1 provides a formal request to step into the 'friend and adviser' role. The request may be ignored but at least there is now a mechanism for making the request. Note that the emphasis in this code is on 'trouble'. The person is in 'trouble' and is asking for help. Other codes have less urgency.
