If the person performing has really misunderstood the task then the performance may have little value. Yet the ability of the person may be high. This is yet another code which offers a way out. It is usually not too difficult to tell when a person is moving ahead - but in the wrong direction. The misunderstanding may be the fault of the person setting the task or of the person carrying out the task. If the direction was not clear then it would be unjust to blame the doer. Instructions that are confusing can be clarified through questioning. However, instructions that seem to point very clearly, but in the wrong direction, never get challenged.
